what is Fissure Sealant of Teeth ?

What are fissure sealants?

A simple description of teeth fissure sealants is to put a thin layer of preventative filling material into the fissures of molar teeth.

The purpose of this is to prevent food left in the grove of teeth to cause decay. Please see the above picture as a demonstration.

It is very effective in children’s mouths as they are actively eating throughout the day.

The process of applying the fissure sealant is simple and painless. First, the teeth are thoroughly cleaned and dried. Then, a special solution is applied to the teeth to help the sealant bond to the enamel. Finally, the sealant is painted onto the teeth and allowed to harden, usually with the help of a curing light.

The fissure sealant creates a barrier that helps prevent food particles and bacteria from getting trapped in the grooves and pits of the teeth, which can lead to decay. It is a highly effective way to protect the teeth from cavities and is often recommended for children and teenagers who are at a higher risk for tooth decay.

Fissure sealants are typically long-lasting and can provide protection for several years. However, they may need to be checked and replaced over time to ensure they are still providing adequate protection.
